Types of Financial Aid
Grants:
Awards based on need that do not need to be repaid.
Scholarships:
Awards based on some kind of special achievement, either academic, athletic, or service.
Work-study:
Part-time employment that lets a student earn money toward a college education either on or off campus.
Student loans:
Money borrowed, either from a bank, the government, or a school.
A student loan must be repaid.
Conversion scholarships/loans:
Scholarships that require you to provide certain services for a period of time. If you don't, you have to repay the money with interest.
Waivers:
Eliminate certain costs for students who meet certain qualifications. Kentucky offers waivers for:
- Adopted and foster children (
KRS 164.2847).
- Dependents of deceased employees participating in state-administered retirement systems (
KRS 164.2841).
- Dependents of disabled employees participating in state-administered retirement systems (
KRS 164.2842).
- Dependents of deceased or disabled Kentucky law enforcement officers and firefighters (
KRS 164.2841).
- Dependents of deceased or totally disabled Kentucky veterans (
KRS 164.505, KRS 164.507, KRS 164.512 and KRS 164.515).
Military benefits:
Are based on U.S. military service. Kentucky military benefits include:
- Kentucky Air National Guard Education Assistance.
- Kentucky Army National Guard Federal Tuition Assistance.
- Kentucky National Guard Montgomery GI Bill.
- Kentucky National Guard Montgomery GI Bill Kicker.
- Kentucky National Guard Tuition Award.
