9th Grade/Freshman Year

  • Talk with your guidance counselor about:

    • Your Individual Learning Plan
    • Going to college
    • Classes. You should take at least 4 college prep classes per year, including:

      • 4 years of English.
      • 4 years of math (including Algebra I, geometry and Algebra II).
      • 2 years of foreign language.
      • 3 years of natural science.
      • 3 years of history/social studies.
      • 1 year of visual and performing arts.
      • Electives from the areas above.

    • Using the Freshman Planner to keep track of your courses and grades.

    Remember, you'll have more options if you plan and earn good grades.

  • Create a file of the following:

    • Copies of report cards
    • Lists of awards and honors
    • Lists of school and community activities, including both paid and volunteer work, and descriptions of what you do

  • Start thinking about the colleges you want to attend. (Use our Select a School module to help look for schools.) Once you've narrowed the list, start visiting campuses. Our Campus Tours section can also give you some valuable information.

  • Find out about AP, IB, and dual credit courses. You may be able to get a scholarship to help pay for AP or dual credit courses.
