Promising PracticesCrawford Middle SchoolAwareness of Postsecondary OptionsEighth grade students from Crawford County Middle School participated in a tour and program at the Central Kentucky Technical College (CKTC) on September 17, 2003. The focus of the program was to increase student awareness on postsecondary education options and provide information on admissions and financial aid. In addition, students completed an interest and career inventory. In collaboration with the Career/Technical Office at Fayette County Public Schools and CKTC in Lexington, the program was planned and implemented. In addition to touring the campus and learning about programs at CKTC, students completed an interest and career inventory through the testing center at CKTC. Crawford Middle school staff did have the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding about the programs offered at CKTC. Students increased their knowledge and understanding of the training/education programs at CKTC in addition to information about admissions and financial aid. Students were exposed to multiple careers. After visiting CKTC and completing the career and interest inventories, students discussed how the career and interest inventories could guide them in planning their careers as well as their high school curriculum. The only cost associated with this program was transporting students to CKTC. This expense was covered with funds through the Fayette County Career/Technical Office. This activity addressed one of the essential activities for Awareness and Access - campus tour/visit and general financial aid workshop. Contact Information:
