Addressing the GEAR UP priority goals of Awareness, Engagement, and Access, each day's workshops included financing college, the pre-college curriculum, the high school resume, study skills and college preparedness, career and interest inventories, and the parent's role in guiding and planning. A featured speaker began and another featured speaker ended each day. There were various booths including University of Louisville admissions information and career information. The workshops were held at three sites (UofL and two GEAR UP schools) in September, November, and February, 2003-2004.
Working with a core group of individuals from the Undergraduate Studies Department at UofL, the GEAR UP coordinator enlisted the assistance of representatives from a variety of organizations and agencies (members of District PTSA; various departments from the Jefferson County Public Schools' Middle School Support Unit; a middle school counselor; a Youth Service Center Coordinator; an assistant principal from a local GEAR UP school; the regional parent support coordinator for a state-wide parent advocacy group as well as parent participants from that program; and a representative of Metro Louisville's Neighborhood Youth Board all participated in bi-monthly planning sessions. After the first College 101, discussion with schools about how to increase parent involvement in the program led to the birth of College 101 on the Road. In November 2003 and February 2004, College 101 was conducted at a GEAR UP high school with parents and students on a Saturday. While the content was basically the same, the location was changed to draw more GEAR UP parents. Everyone feels that the session, "The Parent's Role in Planning and Guiding" was especially helpful as parent facilitators shared information and experiences about how to "parent" a child through the college preparation process, beginning at the middle school level.
