Promising PracticesMorgan County Middle SchoolGEAR UP Overnighter to Morehead State UniversityAll 7th grade students are informed of an overnight college visit to Morehead State University. The site facilitator talks with all students about the trip and passes out information sheets that students take home and share with parents. Forty students who return the completed paperwork are eligible to attend the overnighter. The trip includes: tours of MSU, eating in the cafeteria, staying in a dorm, attending workshops conducted by college personnel, bowling, swimming, and speaking with financial aide advisors and KHEAA representatives. The site facilitator talks with all participating 7th grade students about the scheduled trip and then passes out further information that students take home and share with the parents. Trip arrangements are made in cooperation with the GEAR UP office located at Morehead State University. Students attend mini-workshops through out the day and in the evening they go swimming and bowling. Chaperones for the trip include the site facilitator, GEAR UP Staff, and teachers from Morgan County Middle School. Each year this program has been well attended and something that 7th graders look forward to doing. For some of the students it is the first time to see a college campus and to stay in college housing. Each year we have provided this program the number of participants has increased. The cost of the Overnighter is approximately $1500. The cost includes $1200 Meals, lodging, and admission fees, $300 for transportation (roundtrip from Morgan County Middle School - Morehead State University). Standards and Indicators for Success:
