Essential Activities & Goals

Performance Indicators Essential Activities
An increased number of students enroll in postsecondary institutions. All GEAR UP middle school students should attend at least one college awareness activity by the end of 8th grade (e.g., college and career expo, campus visit, college reality store).
An increased number of students take the ACT. All GEAR UP students should receive test preparation for the ACT (e.g., ACT Plan, ACT Explore).
An increased number of students are aware of the classes needed in high school for college.

All GEAR UP students should complete the Individual Graduation Plan by 8th grade.

All GEAR UP schools should provide at least one guidance activity on college planning for students each year.

All targeted GEAR UP students should participate in quarterly college-prep conferences.

An increased number of students perceive college as affordable.

All GEAR UP middle school students should participate in at least one financial aid awareness activity.

All targeted GEAR UP students should attend one FAFSA workshop in the fall of the 12th grade.

GEAR UP schools should invite KHEAA outreach staff to host financial aid workshops.

An increased number of parents perceive college as affordable. GEAR UP parents should be offered opportunities to attend financial aid workshops.
An increased number of students talk to someone in their school about college.

All targeted GEAR UP students should participate in quarterly college-prep conferences.

All GEAR UP middle school students should attend at least one college awareness activity by the end of 8th grade.

All GEAR UP schools should participate in at least one college awareness event for students each year.

The percentage of GEAR UP students at the novice level in mathematics, as determined by the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS), decreases.

GEAR UP schools in the lowest quartile should receive additional assessment of their instruction and curricula (e.g., Program Improvement Review, Different Ways of Knowing, EPAS).

Targeted support should be offered to academically at-risk students.

Targeted GEAR UP schools should revise their comprehensive improvement plans and address instructional deficiencies.

Targeted GEAR UP schools should engage in curricular alignment activities.

The percentage of GEAR UP students at the novice level in science, as determined by CATS, decreases.
The percentage of GEAR UP students at the novice level in writing, as determined by CATS, decreases.
An increasing percentage of GEAR UP students take algebra in middle school (7th and 8th grade).

GEAR UP middle schools should prepare students to enroll in algebra by the 8th grade.

Targeted GEAR UP schools should engage in vertical teamwork.

An increased number of GEAR UP students will not be enrolled in remedial courses during their freshman year of college. Targeted GEAR UP schools should be encouraged to volunteer to take part in the Educational Planning and Assessment System (EPAS).
An increased number of parents participate in the GEAR UP parent survey.

Parent activities should include:

Financial aid and college planning workshops for parents.

College reality stores for parents.

Seminars and activities on the Individual Graduation Plan.

Participation in the Prichard Committee's Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership and completion of a GEAR UP related project at their child's school.

Workshops for parents on academic planning.

An increased number of parents take part in GEAR UP activities.
An increased number of parents complete the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership training.
More parents talk to someone at their child's school about college admissions.
More parents talk to someone about financial assistance for college.
More GEAR UP high school students qualify for KEES. GEAR UP students should receive information about KEES eligibility by the end of 8th grade.
More GEAR UP high school graduates access state need-based aid (CAP and KTG). GEAR UP students should receive information about CAP and KTG by the fall semester of their senior year.
More students participate in mentoring programs. Mentoring activities should include pairing college students, community volunteers, teachers or other school personnel with targeted GEAR UP students.
More students receive tutoring and service learning opportunities. Tutoring and service learning opportunities should be available after-school, on weekends, or during the summer.
